meet The Artist

Alicia Sheridan is a multimedia creative living in West Philadelphia. A terminally ill 5x cancer survivor, she was first sick with cancer at 13 years old. Currently she lives with over 20 brain tumors. Her work is an exploration of time, grief, and corporeal entropy. She is inspired by artist Eva Hesse, bioarchitecture, and her own lived experience as a sick & disabled person.

Papier-mâché has been Alicia’s primary medium for 5 years. She chose papier-mâché because the paper undergoes visible changes as it ages. Alicia hopes her work serves as a reminder that aging is a precious process. Nothing lasts forever.

The Hollows of My Bones (2022)

The Smaller Hollows of My Bones

The Hollows Of My Bones is a functional bookshelf made of papier-mâché over a steel skeleton. It took a full year to construct. The paper used is a newsprint and it changes color as it ages. The lighter spots on the shelves are from more recently added paper. This choice in material is intended to serve as a reminder that aging is a precious process. Nothing lasts forever.

As a childhood stage IV bone cancer survivor, the artist made this piece to process the physical and emotional grief of surviving. This is a monument to her fragile bones.
